(SAFAR)

SAFAR - meaning journey, is a collective of researchers, journalists, students, lawyers, activists, cultural practitioners and performing artists with a deep commitment to the ideals of social and gender equality. We at safar, however, do not collapse these objectives into water-tight compartments of zealously held opinions. We see it basically as an open space for the dialogue, betterment and empowerment of the marginalized.

Safar does appreciate historically determined causes of deprivation, however we also realize that the phenomenon may also affect sections of people falling outside the structural categories. it is with this realization that Safar endeavors to reach out to the visible and not so visible sections of society.

Advocacy campaigns, legal aid camps, cultural and creative festivals along with workshops constitute the repertoire of Safar in its engagement with the deprived and marginalized.

Cutural Unit
Safar espouses an inclusive, pluralistic and dynamic vision of culture. We are against treating culture as heritage or exotica. If it does not pervade the real life world of people it is at best a picture postcard representation. And it is here that idea of culture needs to be linked to the question of livelihood. Of course we do not intend to disparage the significance of mainstream forms of cultural practices like films, theatre or popular music. image from 'abhivyakti' festivalWhat we wish to emphasize is that people who do not hog the limelight also have culture of their own and it is never less vibrant than the prevalent mass culture. People and communities must have the freedom and resources to be innovative in their own way.

Legal Unit

The Safar activists have known from their informal interactions with the poor and weaker sections that very often it is the lack legal aid campof Legal literacy, which prevents them from availing the existing facilities and remedies. Thus Safar proposes to undertake a focused programme of organizing legal literacy campaigns, counseling and legal aid camps in order to make people aware of their rights.

Research Unit

We at Safar seek to integrate the urban and rural in a mutually engaging way. Research is often taken to be a rarefied activity-something that is associated with obscure figures and hard to understand inferences. What we intend to do at Safar is a people-oriented idea of delhi mapresearch. As a part of this approach we propose to bring out monographs and reports on diverse issues such as pattern and practices of livelihood, micro economic communities, changing dynamics of rural and urban spaces etc. essentially, the idea behind research is to engage with people’s concerns in a sustained manner.
